Cowork
tooltopic-note
Overview
Cowork is Anthropic‘s document and slide surface for Claude, originally a separate product for long-running agentic work anchored in persistent artifacts (documents, slide decks, files, connectors, skills, schedules). It was designed to contrast with chat’s ephemeral surface and with per-document artifacts like ChatGPT Canvas or Google Gemini-in-Docs. As of Sept 16, 2026, Cowork has been folded into the main Claude interface, and Claude Docs and Claude Slides ship as first-party artifact types with PPTX/PDF export.
Timeline
- 2026-09-17-AI-Digest — Anthropic collapsed Cowork’s document/slide surface into the main Claude interface (a UX-only merger, no pricing change), and shipped Claude Docs and Claude Slides with PPTX/PDF export. Included in every paid plan already (Pro $20, Max 5× $100, Max 20× $200, Team $25/seat); Pro/Max first, Team/Free next, Enterprise gets a 30-day notice.
Key Developments
- UX consolidation, not pricing news: Cowork was already bundled into every paid plan. The Sept 16 merger changes the surface (one session pivots between Q&A, doc drafting, slide building), not the tier.
- Persistent-artifact-as-primary-surface: Anthropic frames the product as “conversation as a persistent record of both the instructions and the finished work” — Cowork projects carry connectors, skills, files, and schedules across sessions. Distinct from ChatGPT Canvas (per-document) and Gemini-in-Docs (Google-app-bound).
- API leakage to watch: Claude Docs and Claude Slides landing as first-party artifact types is the tell for a
documents/slidesprimitive on the API surface next.
