Overview

Perplexity Personal Computer is the ambient desktop AI agent from Perplexity, launched in general availability on macOS for all Perplexity Max ($200/month) subscribers on April 16, 2026. The product turns a user-supplied Mac mini (Perplexity recommends the $599 M4 model) into a 24/7 background AI agent that lives across every app, invoked by double-tapping the Command key and responding to both text and voice. Personal Computer is Perplexity’s most direct consumer-product challenge to Anthropic’s Claude Cowork and the first AI product to gate capability behind the $200 Max tier as a structural anchor rather than as a usage-uplift plan.

Timeline

  • 2026-04-17-AI-DigestGeneral availability launch, April 16, 2026. Rolled out to all Perplexity Max subscribers on macOS (not available to the $20/month Pro tier). Lives on a user-supplied Mac mini ($599 M4 recommended) that stays plugged in and awake 24/7 as the execution host. Invoked by double-tapping the Command key; responds to text and voice. Persistent access to local files, Gmail, Slack, GitHub, and an expanding connector list. Can see the active app and surface context-relevant quick actions. Explicit positioning as the most credible direct challenger to Anthropic’s Claude Cowork (which went GA on macOS/Windows earlier in April).

Key Developments

  1. Dedicated Always-On Hardware Model: The requirement that users plug in a dedicated Mac mini is a novel consumer-AI architecture — the agent runs on always-awake user-owned hardware, not on Perplexity’s cloud or on the user’s primary laptop. The approach answers the “my laptop sleeps and my agent dies” problem differently from Anthropic’s Routines cloud execution: Perplexity moves the burden onto the user’s hardware instead of their own compute.

  2. Max-Tier Price Anchor: Personal Computer is the first Perplexity capability gated exclusively to the $200 Max tier. The move transforms Max from a usage-uplift plan into a product-bundle plan — mirroring Anthropic’s Claude Code being usage-bounded to the Max tier and OpenAI’s ChatGPT Pro ($200) anchoring higher-tier features.

  3. Ambient Across Every App: The invocation model — double-tap Command, see context from whichever app is active — is the clearest consumer implementation yet of “AI that lives across all your apps” without requiring each app to integrate a specific SDK. The context is pulled at the OS level rather than via per-app integrations.

  4. Prosumer / Power-User Positioning: The hardware prerequisite ($599 Mac mini kept plugged in) meaningfully restricts the addressable market to prosumer and power-user segments. Enterprise deployments, where IT departments prefer centrally managed agent runtime, map poorly onto the “user-owned always-on hardware” architecture.
