PERSON
John Jumper
Overview
John Jumper is the AlphaFold lead and 2024 Nobel laureate in Chemistry — co-recipient alongside Demis Hassabis (and David Baker) for protein-structure prediction work conducted at DeepMind. After nine years at Google / DeepMind, Jumper joined Anthropic in mid-June 2026, in what the digest reads as the cleanest expression to date of Anthropic’s AI-for-science buildout.
Timeline
- 2026-06-20-AI-Digest — Jumper announces he is leaving DeepMind for Anthropic after nine years in an X post late Thursday; Anthropic confirms the hire on the record to Bloomberg without specifying a role title. Lands inside a window in which DeepMind has lost three senior researchers in roughly two weeks — Jumper to Anthropic, Noam Shazeer to OpenAI (2026-06-19-AI-Digest), and AlphaGo / AlphaZero co-lead David Silver to a new venture — with Anthropic capturing the science track and OpenAI the modelling track. The corpus has been tracking Anthropic‘s AI-for-science posture since the Coefficient Bio acquisition (2026-04-06-AI-Digest) and the Christopher Olah–Vatican appearance (2026-05-26-AI-Digest); the Jumper hire is the marquee individual-research migration of the year into Anthropic.
Key Developments
-
DeepMind → Anthropic Move (June 19–20, 2026): Nine-year tenure at Google / DeepMind ends; Anthropic confirms the hire to Bloomberg without specifying a role title. Most senior science-track migration into Anthropic of the year, on top of the Coefficient Bio and Olah-via-Vatican corpus thread.
-
Three-Departure DeepMind Pattern: Jumper (to Anthropic) + Shazeer (to OpenAI) + Silver (own venture) inside two weeks. The accurate framing is “DeepMind is losing top talent to multiple destinations,” not “Anthropic is hiring everyone” — the destinations carry different signals.
