Overview

Agent Skills is an Anthropic-originated specification for packaging reusable skill definitions that agents can load into their context on demand. In October 2026 Anthropic formally donated Agent Skills to the Linux-Foundation-hosted Agentic AI Foundation — the same body MCP went to in December 2025 — moving spec stewardship to a neutral, vendor-neutral venue.

Timeline

  • 2026-10-23-AI-Digest — Anthropic formally donated Agent Skills to the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF), the Linux-Foundation-hosted body Anthropic co-founded with Block and OpenAI. The framing phrase from the post is “open, community-driven, and vendor-neutral.” AAIF is the same foundation that received MCP in December 2025 — a second Anthropic standard moving into the same neutral home, not a new foundation being announced.

Key Developments

  1. AAIF Donation (October 23, 2026): Agent Skills joins MCP under the Linux-Foundation-hosted Agentic AI Foundation, whose Platinum members include Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Bloomberg, and Cloudflare. For anyone building on Agent Skills, the governance-risk profile just dropped — spec evolution now flows through a neutral body rather than Anthropic unilaterally. Load-bearing clarification worth carrying: this is distinct in kind from the Oct 22 Christopher Stubbs → Long-Term Benefit Trust addition (board composition, internal corporate governance). Two different lanes of Anthropic ceding control on the same week’s calendar; not an accelerating pattern, two separate moves.
